This time we would like to introduce another interesting sustainability innovation called the “Pirika”. Pirika first started as a start-up project by research facilities in Kyoto University. The start-up first launched in 2011 with the aim of solving litter problem by utilizing the internet technology. Pirika uses the concept of “social photo sharing” which had been adopted by social media app like Instagram and Meta. Pirika encourage its users to upload any litter that found anywhere in the streets or public spaces that had been dumped by others. The GPS tracking technology then will use every location of the picture taken to create a nice visualization of “Waste Map”. This visualization data then will be shared for free to communities, organization, companies, or individuals that wish to initiate any clean-up effort. According to Pirika, over 1500 companies, organization, and governments have utilize this data.
By enabling its user to visualize the act of litter collecting, Pirika also aims to motivate and raise the awareness of its users through this app to spread the word and help creating a cleaner environment in the future. Since its first launch, various municipal government in Japan has started to collaborate with Pirika on clean-up effort although Oita Prefecture is still not in the list. However, in the past few months we notice couple of users from Oita especially from Saiki has been actively uploading waste picture from the beach and other places like streets and bus stops. Why don’t we use this opportunity to spread the word from Beppu?
Pirika is available to download from both Google Play Store and Apple Store. If you like to know more about Pirika please visit the official homepage by clicking the link below
