"Beppu Global Garden is a space where APU students, faculty, and staff can experiment with sustainable farming alongside local people and farmers, thereby spreading awareness of the current situation regarding the local environment and agriculture"

Vision: To become a platform where creative ideas towards sustainable agriculture are fostered and initiated without borders.

Mission: Creating a space that fosters symbiotic learning between APU and the local community of Beppu with a common goal of developing sustainable farming.

We value:

  • Our connections with our stakeholders: KEPC, APU community, farmers, our neighbors.

  • Sustainable farming knowledge from our research, as well as from people who have experience

  • Our farm: The farm was entrusted to none other than ourselves, we should respect and take good care of it.

Currently, BGG is managed by ECOS and we hold regular farming activities every Sunday from 9 a.m. at Beppu Global Garden in collaborating with Kamegawa Environmental Protection Club (KEPC).

BGG also holds a monthly beach and river clean-up activity with KEPC with an aim to restore the firefly and sea-turtle population along Hiya River and Sekinoe Beach, increasing the population of fireflies by 600% since its inception. We hold an annual firefly counting and watching event. In addition to that, BGG also hosts various workshops to foster learning between APU community and local experts in sustainability practices. For example, making EM Bokashi (organic fertilizer), Compost Toilet Building workshop, making eco-detergents from scratch and bamboo stardome-making workshop.

Through the implementation of BGG projects various SDG Goals that could be connected are as follows:

· Goal 2: Zero Hunger

“End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture” (SDG2) recognizes the inter linkages among supporting sustainable agriculture and empowering small farmers. BGG recognizes the importance of development of sustainable agriculture to support growing food demand and empowerment of farmers.

· Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

Average per capita consumption is expected to grow through 2030, despite population increases. At the same time, around one third of food produced is wasted. Sustainable farming practices at BGG encourage mindful consumption of food produced, limiting food waste and promoting distribution of excess produce to those in need.

· Goal 13: Climate Action

By 2030, agriculture’s carbon mitigation potential could reach as much as 7.5% of total global emissions, depending on the price of carbon and adoption of agricultural productivity measures. Organic sustainable farming practices at BGG ensure that carbon emissions from practicing agriculture are minimal and do not harm the environment.

· Goal 15: Life on Land

Improving the efficiency of farmland can help meet the world’s growing consumption demand while minimizing the loss of natural habitats and forests for additional cultivation. Protection of firefly habitat near Hiya River also contributes to the preservation of various ecosystem services provided by fireflies.
